Privacy Policy

The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) operates the Landslide Early Warning Mobile Application. The application provides official Landslide Early Warning bulletins, automated rainfall monitoring data, and hazard alert levels to the public and disaster management authorities across Sri Lanka.

This Privacy Policy outlines our standards and practices regarding the collection, use, and protection of information when using our mobile application on Android and iOS devices, in full compliance with Google Play Store and Apple App Store guidelines.

1. Information We Collect

The application only accesses and processes data strictly necessary to provide early warning services:

• Location Data: With your permission, the application accesses your device's approximate and precise geographic location (ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION and ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION on Android; Location When In Use on iOS).
  Use: Location data is used solely to display your position relative to nearby rainfall stations and active landslide hazard zones on the map, and to show alert bulletins relevant to your administrative division. Location data is processed on-device and is not stored on our servers, tracked in the background, or used for behavioral profiling.
• Push Notification Tokens: When you allow notifications, a device registration token is generated via Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) / Apple Push Notification service (APNs).
  Use: To transmit urgent landslide early warning messages, hazard level changes, and cancellation notices issued by the NBRI Early Warning Centre.
• Application Diagnostics: Anonymous technical diagnostic information (device model, operating system version, and crash logs collected via Sentry) may be transmitted in the event of an application failure.
  Use: To identify technical errors, diagnose app crashes, and maintain service reliability during critical weather events.
• Local Storage: User interface settings (selected language and display preferences) and the latest downloaded hazard report are stored locally on your device storage / SQLite database to facilitate offline viewing.

2. Data Not Collected

To respect your privacy:

• We do not require user accounts, logins, or personal passwords.
• We do not collect names, phone numbers, email addresses, or contact lists within the application.
• We do not sell, rent, or trade any user information to third parties or data brokers.
• We do not display commercial advertisements.

3. Third-Party Services

The application utilizes the following standard service providers to deliver map rendering, notifications, and error reporting:

• Google Maps SDK (Google LLC): Map display. Google Privacy Policy
• Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google LLC): Push notifications delivery. Firebase Privacy Information
• Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.): Crash diagnostics. Sentry Privacy Policy

4. Data Retention and Deletion

• We do not maintain identifiable personal data records.
• Push notification device tokens remain valid only while the application is installed and active on your device. Uninstalling the application automatically invalidates the notification token.
• Locally stored cache data can be cleared at any time through your device application settings.

5. Children's Privacy

The application provides public safety information and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
